Fall Has Always Been My Favorite Season

My thoughts drift
between the heavy rain
and thunderstorm clouds
to the rays of gold
stretching through the sails
on the Chesapeake

there is something to be said
for those cotton sundress sunsets
golden sparkles dance
across the sky
neon colors kiss the sails
summer stains all in its wake

but these drops of golden-honeyed
gray cable-knit sweater sunsets
leave the most mysterious
paint strokes of color
across the sky
and my heart

like an answer
to a long-awaited question
found in the bottom
of a brown wicker basket
I feel it is time
to write the memoirs
of summer’s past

I can’t say I am sad
about the change
there is beauty in the letting go
and mystery in the crimson kissed
gray thunder clouds
and all the weight they carry…
