Almost Heaven

Sharing this one again because it’s a wonderful reminder of how blessed I am to live where I do.

almost heaven

I am from a place

where highways border byways

and backroads border fields

A state that borders one state

and another

Where a2 +b2 =c2

A hypotenuse

of coal mines

and train whistles

and Blue Ridge Mountains

Where country roads lead to home

A place where God’s hands have touched

and you can witness His greatness

when the leaves carpet the ground

with hues of gold

and orange

and red

When you witness the sky kiss the farmlands

or taste the dirt

that’s as sweet as beets

A place you didn’t know you longed for

until you stand outside on a summers day

and hear the humming of the boxed fans in the windows

and the conversations

of babbling brooks

A true great wide open

that holds fields of wheat

and sunflowers

Where the sun kisses the Appalachian Mountains

goodnight –

or good morning

depending on which direction your rocking chair is pointed

Where the rain has its own distinct scent

and even the earth can’t help but to deeply inhale

Where Jack Frost nips at your nose

but its worth it

to see the sun glistening the snow

Where no matter the season

you will see porch swings swinging

holding souls wrapped in wool

and sipping coffee

A place where children still play outside

and fire embers carry their giggles

in the wind

A place that will dig its roots so deep in your soul

you don’t stand a chance of forgetting

Just like you can’t forget a mothers love

or your first taste of honey
