If I asked you to tell me your favorite Tom Hanks movie, what would you say? Forrest Gump? The Green Mile? Cast Away?
All of those movies are excellent. Honestly, I’m not sure there’s one of his movies that I don’t like, but there is one I hold very high, one the is often overlooked, and it’s my third choice.
Kristian’s 3rd choice of underrated movies is:
Joe Versus The Volcano (1990) Directed by John Patrick Shanley
Joe versus The Volcano is a romantic comedy, a very original romantic comedy. We all know that Tom Hanks & Meg Ryan have chemistry in movies such as You’ve Got Mail or Sleepless In Seattle, and you can easily see it in this movie as well.
If you pay close attention, this movie has a lot of symbolism, lots of connections, and it’s very well written. The movie starts with Joe, tired of his mundane job and life. When he receives a fatal diagnosis from his doctor, Joe quits his job and decides to truly start living. He is offered the chance of a lifetime, but it will cost him his life, having no family, and knowing his time is running short anyway, Joe accepts his fate.
This movie left me chuckling and gives me heart squeezes time and time again. It’s a classic that never grows old! It’s a great reminder to take chances and face our fears, and that there’s more to life than simply working and paying bills. It teaches the importance of human interaction, and most importantly, love. The soundtrack is pretty decent too. If you haven’t seen this movie, it’s an absolute must!!
Have you seen Joe Versus The Volcano? What underrated movie(s) would you recommend? I’d love to read your thoughts.
Love & life lessons,
Kristian

I have seen it…maybe a couple of times…but years ago.
I love it because of them – any script, any plot – Tom and Meg lit up the screen!
