Going To Market On A Wednesday Afternoon

is not the way to start a poem

but have you?

Have you walked through the

not as crowded as Saturday aisles

and watched the butcher shave

the meat from a cured ham,

hanging over his head?

Has your stomach woken

from its slumber

at the scent of

freshly baked bread?

Have you watched the baker,

her hands stained

with cinnamon,

as she rolls out

her pastry dough?

Have you tasted

the delicate sample

of an angel wing,

my favorite pastry,

that melts

as soon as it hits

your tongue?

Have you stopped by

the delicatessen

and sampled the different cheeses?

Have you felt the sharpness

of the cheddar as it dances

with your taste buds?

Have you watched

someone make your sandwich?

Spreading olive oil

on a freshly baked roll

topped with smoked provolone

and the finest Italian cured meats –

ham, salami, and pepperoni?

Adorned with banana peppers,

kalamata olives, fresh tomatoes

off the vine, and garlic pickles.

Have you bitten into it, experienced

the umami party?

Is your mouth watering?

Have you ever been to

market

on a Wednesday

afternoon?
