Every Month Didi Oviatt creates a writing prompt, and the only rule is to use the characters from our current WIP and write about the topic provided. You can read Didi’s original post below:
DEC. WIP Writing Prompt Challenge: Winter Tradition
There is a place in far western Maryland, where taking a step on the old brick sidewalks is like stepping into a time machine, taking you back to times before everyone did their shopping online, a magical place, where people greet you with smiles, Christmas carolers are on every corner, and a horse drawn sleigh roams the streets in search of passengers who want to take a ride through the snow.
This place was home to Cara, she was born and raised here, she lived here the majority of her life, it’s where she learned how to shoot an arrow, it’s where she discovered her love for antique shops, and most importantly, it’s where she met Michael.
Cara and Michael hadn’t been back to Cara’s hometown since her mother passed away, but after five years of watching Cara’s sad eyes, missing the traditions she once held near & dear to her heart, he knew he had to do something.
Here she stood, in front of the old post office, just staring at the old stone building that looks like something out of a Charles Dickens novel.
“You alright?” Michael asked her.
“Yes, I’m fine. It’s just amazing to me how so much is changed, yet at the same time, so much is still the same.”
Michael kissed her on the cheek and noticed she was holding a lollipop. He chuckled, “Old Man Johnson still works here huh?”
Cara chuckled, “Yes, and he remembered me, as if no time had passed at all.”
“How many times do I have to tell you my love, you don’t look a day over twenty five?”
Cara looped her arm through Michael’s. “Promise me, we will always come back here the day after Christmas.”
“I promise my dear, we will spend New Year’s Eve in our hometown, watching the ball drop on TV in our cabin, and hopefully our old friends will join us every year too.”
“Yes, because then after we celebrate the New Year, we also celebrate your birthday, old man.” Cara teased.
And from that year forward Michael kept his promise to Cara, and although nothing could replace the hole in her heart from losing her parents, she always felt warm coming home.
I hope you all enjoyed reading about Cara & Michael’s new tradition. It’s not as detailed as they usually are, but I’ve been having some trouble writing fiction lately. I just can’t seem to find my groove, but it’s better than nothing I suppose. I’m sure the next prompt will be better!
Love & life lessons,
Kristian

I was actually going to take a picture of myself yesterday… but my goodness if that camera didn’t show a hot mess….
You’ve said men age like a fine wine. This picture proves that some are like an open beer that’s sat in the fridge for a week…
