The Wolf’s Howling

One of my favorite bloggers, Mathew, of Blog of the Wolf Boy has posted a challenge for us to enter to win a signed copy of his book, “Emotions in Motion.”

He asked us to create a piece, whether it be a story, poem, etc… it doesn’t matter, the only rule is that it must include a wolf.

I have always been taken with wolves, so I thought I would give this a shot.

Here goes nothing…..

A lone wolf howls every night for the moon

seeking the light as the night comes so soon.

He keeps to himself, but is sadly mistaken,

Here in the woods, his soul is awakened.

Loyalty lies within his veins

and he aches for the few caring souls that remain.

He keeps to the woods because he sees what’s beyond it

demons of hate, greed, and lack of atonement.

We are those demons playing the game,

pointing our fingers instead of taking the blame.

We explore the world with wool over our eyes,

and can’t understand why the wolf cries.

Another gun shot, another day,

have we become so immune, we just accept these ways?

No longer recognizing souls behind flesh

just sheep that we shave, for fools to impress.

Hardening our hearts to face another day,

refusing to accept it’s lies that they say.

I don’t want to be just another sheep grazing

 to help line the pockets of those less than amazing.

There has to be more than just hatred that’s winning

I can’t just accept this is what we call living.

Friends, I implore you to not be immune

to the lives that are taken, gone much too soon.

Don’t wait until you’ve become a victim of prowling

before you fully understand why the wolf’s howling.
