When I was a child and even into my adolescence I could be sure of two things:
- My mother would always greet me every morning by saying “Good morning, Glory.”
&
2. My mom listened to the local radio station 104.5 WKHJ every single morning, without fail.
WKHJ plays a mix of “Yesterday’s hits and today’s favorites.” I’m aging myself here, but age has never bothered me, it’s something we all must do. As a child of the 90’s (born in the 80’s) our local radio station played mostly hits from the 70’s, 80’s, & 90’s. A band they frequently played back then was Hall & Oates.
I remember sitting at the kitchen table, eating breakfast one morning when I first heard “She’s gone.” I was instantly taken, and they were one of the firsts if not the first band I discovered all on my own.
Back then I would listen to the radio, finger at the ready on the record button so I could quickly press the button as soon as I recognized that first note. I had lots of mixed cassette tapes, but all of them included at least one Hall & Oates song!! (I just got another idea while writing this post. I think I’ll share some of my “mixed tapes,” with you. Now I no longer have those cassette tapes, but I do still remember all of my favorites from back then, so while they may not be exact replica’s, the posts will come pretty close.)
My mom noticed at a very early age I was fascinated with music and writing, she encouraged me to write every day, & she would put on music countless times, in the car, & while she did chores, just so I could listen to it & dance. Sometimes she would dance with me. And when I wanted to learn how to play an instrument, she went out and bought me a clarinet. Once I learned how to play the clarinet well, her and my dad gave me a thousand dollars one Christmas so that I could purchase a wooden clarinet, and that is still one of my most prized & cherished possessions.
Since I was such a huge lover of music, (and cartoons,) my mom bought me a VHS of Hanna Barbera cartoon music videos. I thought I still had this, but as I was going through a multitude of old boxes, I didn’t come across it. It sort of makes me sad, and when I mention it to my peers, a lot of them don’t remember it. Fortunately, YouTube has some of them.
“You Make My Dreams” is one of my all time favorite songs, and it has been for as long as I can remember. That song was one of the music videos!!
The other music videos I remember loving the most are:
Every Breath You Take – The Police
All Night Long – Lionel Richie
Somebody’s Watching Me – Rockwell
Ghostbusters – Ray Parker Jr.
Do you remember these music videos?
And since I started this post talking about my love for Hall & Oates, I’ll leave you with a few more of my favorites!!
Do you like Hall & Oates? What are some of your favorites?
Love & life lessons,
Kristian
