Listen To The Music #7

I have talked about the musicians introduced to me by my parents, brother, and maternal grandmother. I have them to thank for my love of music, and such eclectic taste.

Today’s artist was introduced to me by my Aunt Nancy, my mom’s sister. She would listen to him a lot in the car, and when her and my uncle lived with us for a few months, I listened to him so often that I fell in love with him, and my mom went out & bought me the Full Moon Fever album.

That artist is:

Tom Petty!!

I dearly love this man, and I have so much respect for him. He sings about topics close to my heart, he’s a kindred spirit, and I really hate that I missed the opportunity to see him live. He remains one of my all time favorite artists.

I don’t think there’s a Tom Petty song, solo or with the Heartbreakers that I don’t love, so I’m just going to share a few of my top favorites. The ones that really speak to me or make me move!

  • American Girl

Tom Petty wrote this song about people who are craving something more out of life, who feel stuck, he empathizes with them, with all of us. Who hasn’t felt that way at least once in their life? He also said that he was living in a small apartment at the time he wrote this song. He said the street in Florida was so busy that when the traffic rushed by it sounded like waves crashing along the shore. So he wrote the line “She could hear the cars roll by out on 441, like waves crashing on the beach.” I don’t know why, but I just love that!!

  • I Won’t Back Down

This song was my mantra for a period of time. I felt like no matter what I did I just couldn’t get anywhere. I tried my hardest, gave everything I had, but I was drowning in quicksand. I would play this song over & over again to help get me through. I would look at myself in the mirror and tell the world, “You can stand me up at the gates of hell, but I won’t back down!” That line is still very much true today.

  • Free Fallin’

I mean c’mon…. who doesn’t like this song??

  • You Don’t Know How It Feels

Another heart squeezer. People often don’t stop to put themselves in another’s shoes, this song is a great reminder of that. It’s why it pays to always be kind, you just don’t know what it’s like to be somebody else.

  • Honey Bee

Yeah…. I’m not gonna lie, it’s all about that sexy guitar for me!!

  • Saving Grace

Deep lyrics, great rhythm, exceptional guitar riffs, what’s not to love?

  • Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around

My girl Stevie Nicks sang this one along with Tom, so of course, I love it!!

As I mentioned earlier, I love all of Tom Petty’s songs, so I could go on & on forever, but I’ll spare all of you & stop here.

What about you? Do you like Tom Petty? What are some of your favorites?

Love & life lessons,

I too missed the opportunity to see Tom, when he came to the UK on the Heartbreakers’ 40th anniversary tour. They played Hyde Park in London. I really regret not going. I watched a video on YouTube the other day of Tom and the band performing ‘Learning to Fly’ live in 2006. It’s so moving to watch because you can feel the mutual love between Tom and the audience. He’s an inspiration to me.
