Amanda and I at the spa getting our nails done

A few weeks ago Amanda I went out to celebrate her birthday, a tradition she and I started a few years ago. Every year we go out to celebrate each other’s birthdays. Sometimes it’s going to see a live band, other times it’s the movies, but we always get into something fun.

For her birthday this year, we visited all the cool new(er) places that have recently opened up in our small, yet charming town.

I left early from work on the Friday after her birthday. We went to the spa to get a mani & pedi. Something I haven’t had done for a long time, and I wanted something different so I went with a pretty purple color with gray undertones, certain ways the light hit my nails made them look more gray than purple and vice versa, but I ended up liking it so much that we stopped at Sally’s afterward so I get a bottle. Amanda also went with a purple, but hers was a brighter shade. We had fun trying to match the colors perfectly. Without even realizing, the color I chose was called “Something to Blog About,” how fitting.

Amanda and I are huge coffee lovers so we headed over to our favorite café but unfortunately they were closed, but it all worked out because we visited the 50’s diner on Alder Street in downtown Oakland, and I instantly fell in love with its quaint charm. An old 50’s style diner clock with a pale green light illuminating around its face, Elvis, Beatles, and various other pictures hanging on the walls, along with vinyl records and a shadow box that holds a pair of blue suede shoes. The menu ranges from all kinds of different burgers to actual meals, and the special that day was crab Alfredo, oh my gosh, so good!!

The highlight of the evening was visiting the Sipside Lounge, a first for both of us. It really is a lounge with couches and barrel chairs galore, of course, there are a couple of bars you can sit at as well. The place is dimly lit, adding a certain ambiance that just ties everything together. Amanda and I found our corner, surrounded by pictures of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Bob Marley! We shared a bottle of wine and many, many stories. Conversations with Amanda are among my favorite things in the entire world!

The owner came over and explained that the Beatles picture was actually taken by Paul’s wife, Linda, and it’s a rare picture that captures both John and Paul laughing together. It made me fall in love with it even more. I always stop and look at photographs like this one. I like to imagine the conversation, the levity between the four of them, I think that’s why I’m so taken with photograph’s, you get a glimpse of the world through someone else’s eyes.

I ended the night by giving Amanda her surprise, which consisted of her favorite cupcakes that I make. When I was in my early 20’s I really got into baking and cake decorating. I’m not the greatest decorator in the world, but I really enjoy it. Anyway, I was messing around in my parent’s kitchen one day, I made batches and batches of different kinds of cupcakes until I finally perfected the cake recipe, once that happened I started messing around with different flavors, one of them being lemon with lemon cream cheese icing, Amanda’s favorite. I had been promising these cupcakes to her, but due to timing, Neil’s health, and various other obstacles, it just hadn’t happened. I was determined to make them for her this year, and I did! I’ve already received a request for more!

Every time Amanda and I get together we always end the night by saying, “We really need to do this more often.” I always feel so recharged and relaxed after visiting with her. She restores my soul, makes me feel normal, well not really normal, normal is boring, and what exactly does normal mean anyway? Okay, I could write an entire blog post on that subject alone, so let me steer back on course. We always have good intentions of getting together more often, but adulting sucks and schedules get in the way, and we understand, but that doesn’t mean we have to like it. So here we are, over three weeks have gone by and I find myself missing a part of myself and when I commented on a Facebook Status of hers the other day, it reduced her to tears, and she commented “Yep, that’s it, we need to schedule that coffee date.” So now I am counting down the days till Friday when I can recharge my batteries!

I’m sure there will be a blog post about that too, because every time Amanda and I get together it’s an adventure, even if we don’t make it past her living room.

As my brother always says “Every meal is a banquet, every day an adventure.”
