Tell The Story Challenge #2 – The Stark

Kristian from Tales From The Mind of Kristian tagged me for this challenge.

You Can read his post here.

Thank you, Kristian!

The picture below is the one he chose for the writing prompt. I decided to have a little fun with it. I strayed away from the picture a little, you’ll see what I mean when you read it, but I’m sure Kristian won’t mind. 🙂

The Stark

There is an island in the Atlantic known as Smith Island, Maryland and on that island lives an extremely imaginative little boy known as Jeremiah. There’s not a whole lot to do on the island and you have to take a boat just to visit the grocery store, which is located in Crisfield, the southern most part of Maryland. Lucky for Jeremiah, he absolutely loves the sea and one day dreams of becoming a pirate. One day, while visiting Crisfield with his mother, Jeremiah found a ship in a bottle. He had been saving his chore money for a Lego pirate ship kit he found, but this ship in a jar caught his attention, the ship inside looked just like the one he had seen in his dreams. He had enough to buy it, so his mom allowed it. He rushed to his room and immediately cleared a spot on his bookshelf for it. He named his ship The Stark, after his favorite Marvel superhero.

“Jeremiah, dinner.” His mom yelled up the stairs for him.

Jeremiah came bounding down the stairs, he couldn’t wait to tell his dad about his ship in a jar. It was his dad that got him hooked on ships after he had allowed him to tag along on his crabbing boat one morning..

“Dad?”

“Yes, Jeremiah?”

“Do you think if I wish really, really hard I could own The Stark one day?”

“Son, I think you can do anything you set your mind to.”

After helping his dad clear the table, Jeremiah retreated to his room to continue on his adventures.

He wished and wished and wished that he could sail The Stark. He laid down on his rug, closed his eyes and let his mind wander. Outside a shooting star flew passed his bedroom window.

Jeremiah watched a seagull fly above his head as he steered the ship, the waves crashing against it, making for a very bumpy ride. The waves got higher with every gust of wind. The lightening struck and the thunder crashed. He lost control of the ship and the next, large wave caused the ship to tip, water gushed on board. Jeremiah lost his grip on the helm and slid back to the stern. He scrambled on his hand and knees trying to get to his feet, but to no avail. The water kept gushing into the ship, hitting Jeremiah each time he tried to stand, and when he did manage to get his feet, the gigantic waves would knock him back down. Jeremiah knew that if he didn’t make it back to the helm and regain control, the ship would overturn. Lightning continued to light up the sky and Jeremiah was starting to fear for his life. That fright struck a nerve within him, causing a rush of adrenaline to flow through his system. Jeremiah, once again scrambled on his hands and knees, but he dug his nails so hard into the planks of the soaked wood planks that blood began to run from his fingernails. He managed to keep his grip on the planks as he made his way back to the helm & managed to turn The Stark back on its hull. He managed to grab the lines and adjust his sails into the wind, making his journey not quite so treacherous.

The storm started to quiet, thus, so did the ocean. It was still rough and bumpy, but the ship was much easier to control. Jeremiah sat on his stool, calming his nerves,.

He opened his eyes, smiling as he looked up at the ceiling. He rubbed his eyes, unable to see clearly, everything seemed glossy, and it was unusually dark. He looked around and realized he was on the ship, but there was no sky, nor sun, nor ocean. He looked around confused, looking around at the sails, the masts, and the bow. He put his hand out touched the surface. He ran and jumped with all of his might, trying to pop the cork. How in the world was he going to get out of the bottle?

  6. I really liked this. I’m sorry it has taken so long to read it properly and comment. I enjoyed that sense of mystery, viewing the story through the eyes of a child’s excitement was very well done. 🙂
