Nostalgia Thursday #8 – Music

Some of my absolute favorite moments are time spent in the car with the radio blaring, singing along to all of the songs I know, which just so happens to be a lot. Seriously, I’m pretty sure if my brain were laid out like a map, the majority of it would contain song lyrics.

Sometimes, the radio station plays certain songs back to back, that were just like the way I had songs recorded on my cassette tape in the days of my youth, and all of those memories of times spent with friends, family, and past boyfriends come rushing back. Almost like the universe wanted me to remember those moments, the good and bad, both making me appreciate what I have in life now.

When I hear CCR I am brought back to my parent’s front porch, sitting with my brother while we watched the rain, laughed, shared jokes, dreams, and stories.

When I hear The Beatles I am brought back to my early years, dancing in the living room with my grandma. Jump forward to high school and Yellow Submarine takes me back to sitting with my Marching Band family, watching the crazy movie, laughing, and enjoying each other’s company.

I love how powerful music is. There are so many songs that have impacted my life in so many ways, and while it’s impossible to list them all, I’d like to share a few that instantly take me back to those days.

  • Traveling Band – Creedence Clearwater Revival

As I mentioned before, CCR always makes me think of time spent with my brother, but I distinctly remember many “jam sessions” (lip syncing and air guitar) to this song!

  • I swear – All 4 One

This was the very first song I ever slow danced to. I was just a teenybopper in middle school. I had the biggest crush on a boy named Bobby, (I’ll refrain from using his last name.) He walked up to me and asked me to dance, and I was on cloud nine! I felt truly elated, and I remember not wanting the moment to end. I smile fondly whenever I hear this song and think about that young girl who thought she knew what love was!

  • Everybody (Backstreet’s Back) – The Backstreet Boys

This song was a staple at pretty much every sleepover. A friend had the music video recorded and we watched it over and over, learning the dance moves. Her parent’s living room had old, hardwood floors, and some of the planks were starting to rise. I can’t tell you the number of times I tripped over said plank while learning the dance moves. A bunch of us would line up at middle school and high school dances and bust a move whenever this song was played. I’m a dork, I know! Haha! I still dance to it today, don’t judge me!!

  • To Be With You – Mr. Big

This song brings me back to field trips, riding the bus to and from school. and band trips. Pretty much any time Ashley and I were on the bus together and this song was played, we would sing along at the top of our lungs, annoying the fellow passengers, I’m sure! Hahaha! I can’t help but think of those memories every time we heard this song! Ashley is a part of almost all of my favorite childhood memories!

  • Ride With Me – Nelly

This song makes me think of Amanda and our time spent at high school dances. We would do the move that Tai does in the movie “Clueless” to “Rollin’ With the Homies.”

  • Haunted House – Jumpin’ Gene Simmons

When I was little, even back before I can remember, my dad would sing this song to me, and as I got a little older, he would stand me on his feet and dance around the living room with me. I’m sure that even now, if I played this song, he’d still swing me around the living room! I always think of my dad whenever I hear it.

There are many, many songs that bring back memories for me, and I’ll share those with you at a later time.

What songs bring back memories for you?

Love & life lessons,
